VISITING - School groups

Our teaching programme offers several types of resources for teachers and students: professionally guided tours or free visits with work sheets (French only), teaching resources (French only), a scavenger hunt (French only), a reading corner, an audio tour, interactive kiosk, etc.

The "archaeology" section of this website provides a large quantity of information on the history of the excavations and the chronology of events that took place over the century. Written and visual documents published by the archeologist are provided in the "library" section of the website.

Guided tours for school groups

The Clefs de Saint-Pierre Foundation offers free guided tours for schools in the Canton of Geneva on the following four topics:

  • General: The churches under the Cathedral
  • Archaeology: Remains of the past
  • Religion: Baptism and baptisteries - the origins of a religious ritual
  • Architecture: Geneva's religious heritage, including Saint-Pierre Cathedral

These tours are suitable for primary, secondary and post-secondary classes. They are highly interactive and tailored to the age of the students. Tours can be adapted for specific classroom objectives and projects.

Fees for guided tours:

  • Free admission for public schools of Canton of Geneva, including heritage interpreter fee.
  • For school groups of 15 students or more (private schools from the Canton of Geneva, schools from Switzerland and abroad):
    group admission (CHF 4/student) + guide fee:
    French: 45 min.: CHF 65; 1 hour CHF 85; 1 1/2 hours CHF 130.
    English and German: 45 min.: CHF 80; 1 hour CHF 100; 1 1/2 hours CHF 150.

Self-guided tours for school groups

Cost of self-guided tours:

  • Free admission for public schools from Canton of Geneva.
  • For school groups of 15 students or more (private schools from the Canton of Geneva, schools from Switzerland and abroad): group admission (CHF 4/student).

Activity packs french only

Two activity packs are available: the first focuses on the excavations of the north cathedral, the second one on the baptisteries. Both activity packs are available in three levels: primary years 3-4 (level 1), years 5-6 (level 2) and lower secondary year 7-8-9 (level 3).

The activity work sheets can be downloaded for free and photocopied for handouts to students. An answer key for teachers is also available.

The average time required for each of this activities is 45 to 50 min. This allows teachers to divide classes into two groups working in parallel. The activity is suitable for individual or pair work.

Scavenger hunt

The scavenger hunt is designed for children and students of all ages. This game is an ideal way to explore the entire archaeological site and its main vestiges during a first visit.

Teaching resources

The teaching resources pack is designed to help teachers to prepare their visit with their class. It can be dowloaded and photocopied for free.

Interactive kiosk

Three computer stations that can be used by 2 or 3 students at a time are found along the itinerary (at points 5 and 10 of the audio tour). They provide access to the website as well as interviews of the reseachers and archaeologists who worked on the site.
